Common mistakes made by pre-dental students
- Do NOT assume dental school will be a "back-up/substitute" to going to medical school. Dental school can be just as hard and competitive as medical school but just in different ways.
Tips to be a more successful Dental School applicant
- Intern or volunteer at a local or free dental clinic
- Join a pre-dental/pre--health campus club (Like this one!)
- Start an DAT study group with friends/colleagues
- Spend a large amount of studying and preparing for the Dental Admissions Test (DAT).
- Maintain a GPA no lower than a 3.4
- Get involved in college as well as community related volunteering opportunities.
- Score well on the DAT
- Gain research experience with a science professor at your school
- Demonstrate leadership in both in school and in the community
Dental Admissions Test (DAT)
For more information visit our official DAT page.
The DAT is a standardized test that dental schools use to assess the knowledge and skills of applicants. a good DAT score is crucial to a successful dental school application.
The DAT is a standardized test that dental schools use to assess the knowledge and skills of applicants. a good DAT score is crucial to a successful dental school application.
The test is comprised of several sections that test over natural sciences (biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry), perceptual ability, reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning. Ranging from 45 to 90 minute sections the test takes a total of about 5 hours.
The DAT is scored based on the number of correct answers (so if you were to run out of time, guess away!) The scores are scaled on a scale of 1 to 30 where 18 is usually the average score.
