Below you will find descriptions of volunteering events that we had held/participated in in the past
- Alternative Gift Fair
- Curatio members came together to express their creative and compassionate side by painting an emotional statement. The activity was to blindly, chose an emotion – anger, greed, joy, compassion, excitement, etc. – and paint an image of their interpretation on the word and emotions associated with it. The point was to inspire all viewers to find their compassion and understand that as humans, we all experience the same trials and joys, each and every day. It was a reminder to view all humans as our brothers and sisters and to connect with our compassion. After completion, the painting was donated to the Alternative Gifts Fair hosted by The First United Methodist Church-Denton. The Church hosts the fair each year and choses different non-profit organizations to donate funds to. The funds come from selling unique items created by local Denton residents. This past fall, Opening Doors International Services was chosen as a recipient for donations. Opening Doors International Services is recognized by the U.S. Department of Justice and has a goal to aid immigrants in pro-bono legal services and to increase human trafficking awareness. Members worked anywhere between 1 – 3 hours working on the painting. (This event was combined with creating decorations for Boo at the U). The website for Opening Doors International Services is http:www.odisinc.org/ and the website for FUMC-D is https://fumc-denton.com/
- Boo at the U!
- Boo at the U is a TWU tradition. Every October, student organizations participate in a trunk or treat for students and Denton residents. This past October, members helped to create props for the Curatio trunk, “Mad Scientist”. Members also donated candy and their time by passing out candy to trick-or-treaters. This was a great community event that both students, members and residents enjoyed! Members spent between 1 – 3 hours working on decorations and 1 – 4.5 hours, passing out candy, helping set up and take down decorations.
- Christmas Card Making for the Local Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center
- Curatio members spread the holiday cheer by teaming up with Roots and creating unique Christmas cards for all residents of Cottonwood Nursing and Rehabilitation. Warm and caring wishes were the goal for this activity. Members took anywhere between 1 – 2 hours creating cards to give to residents.
- Habitat for Humanity
- Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-governmental and nonprofit organization that helps build homes for those in need. Both candidates and volunteers come from all walks of life to create a new home that is a beacon of hope to those in need. Fall 2017, Curatio Club participated in three volunteer dates with the Denton branch of Habitat for Humanity. The build site was about 30 minutes away, one way. Each date included new activities for volunteers. On the first build date, insulation was put up on the sides of the walls and the trusses of the ceiling were lifted and put in place by teamwork with a fellow UNT group. The second volunteer date included nailing ply boards to the roof and creating a leak proof roof. Cutting and fitting insulation around the windows was also an activity performed. For the third date, installing sheetrock to the ceiling and walls, along with painting the house, were the main activities. Each participate performed individual and group tasks. The time spent on site ranged between 3.5 – 4.5 hours. If you would like to contact the volunteer coordinator for the Denton Country organization, contact Keri Marie Surtherland at [email protected] or at 940-484-5006 ext 9006
- Pre-Health Fair
- In the first ever Pre-Health Fair, Curatio members hosted different graduate schools and programs at TWU’s Hubbard Hall. More than 15 schools/programs were delighted to accept the invitation. Among the 15 schools were Texas A&M College of Medicine, UNT School of Health Professions, UNT School of Public Health, University of Texas at Austin School of Pharmacy, Texas Tech School of Nursing, St. George’s University School of Medicine and more. Members reserved parking, directed representatives along with carrying supplies if help was needed, supplied lunch and beverages for representatives, ushered and helped TWU students through the fair and exemplified what it means to be an ambassador for members of Curatio Club as future healthcare professionals and embodied the TWU purpose of educated women, empowering the world. Members volunteered anywhere between 1 – 3 hours.
